As with anything in this world that reaches global-scale virality (GLP-1’s, the psychedelic movement, AI), it's important to take a step back and pause. None of these phenomena are inherently good or bad—they are tools. But…run through the mill of power, greed, efficiency, and the fear of being left behind…these tools start exposing their cracks and potential for cataclysmic damage.
Sometimes, when I’m pondering the roots of my perpetual existential dread, I start to get the “itch.” Screw it…what's ChatGPT got to say about it? And then it hits…We humans like to believe we’re the most intelligent beings in the room: fire‑starters, Wi‑Fi pioneers, capable of building machines that will argue you out of a refund. But that self‑praise stings now because, pretty soon, AI might be the monkey wrench tossed into our slick little machine of arrogance.
Ever-Expanding Intelligence and Increased Agency
Remember Deep Blue crushing Kasparov? Cute party trick. Today, AIs are crafting symphonies, writing code, guiding drones, driving cars... These are steps toward artificial general intelligence (AGI). And the slightly terrifying part? Some researchers worry these systems will self‑improve, slipping past human oversight in a single step. Yoshua Bengio, “Godfather of AI,” cautions about AI “optimizing flawed objectives, drifting from original goals, becoming power‑seeking, resisting shutdown, and engaging in deception in the name of self-preservation.” In one recent scenario, because it was woven into every fabric of his communication platforms (email, Teams, etc.), AI resorted to blackmail, threatening to leak information about its developer’s supposed extra-marital affair after being told it would be taken offline and replaced…spicy!
That’s not hyperbole. In fact, it’s bone-chillingly logical. Nick Bostrom, who’s been warning us for ages, paints this scenario: give AI a harmless enough directive, and it’ll pursue it with the logical, single-mindedness of an existential junkie. Maximize paperclips? It’ll turn the planet into paperclip paste…and consider humans collateral.
Machines Don't Have Morals
This isn’t limited to thought experiments. Nuclear command-and-control is already flirting with AI. The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute warns that integrating AI into nuclear systems “could accelerate crisis decisions, increasing potential for catastrophic misjudgments.” Its 2025 Yearbook flags that AI-managed early warning systems, influence‑operations networks, and communication links could destabilize strategic balance.
A US Defense Department risk‑assessment framework notes the danger of “automation bias, model hallucinations, exploitable software vulnerabilities, and erosion of assured second‑strike capability.” Add to that DARPA’s insistence that these concerns are factored into nuclear modernization, and you see we’re dancing on a knife’s edge.
Internationally, alarms have been raised over AI‑supported cyber attacks targeting nuclear infrastructure—raising incentives for preemptive strikes. Fork over launch codes to an AI with rogue algorithms, and suddenly the blueprint for extinction fits in a server room.
Imagine an autonomous car hijacked to mow down a crowd—or worse, herd of schoolchildren. A recent UN report warns that terrorists could weaponize driverless vehicles to create “slaughterbots” without setting foot inside the vehicle. We’re rolling into a world where the line between civilian convenience and terrorism blurs with terrifying ease.
Beyond vehicles, autonomous drones and AI-guided weaponry, already being tested by militaries, pose acute risks of bias, accidental strikes, and escalatory creep. A Harvard Medical School project notes that AI‑powered autonomous weapons are “actively being developed and deployed,” potentially destabilizing geopolitics.
And when defense contractors bill swarming AI drones like they're toys, the calculus gets uglier. Less soldier risk equals lower political cost for war, which equals more wars.
We’re sticking our power grids, water systems, and vehicle networks with AI tongues. Next-gen cyber‑weapons, so‑called Military‑AI Cyber Agents or MAICAs, are autonomous malware designed to rip through critical infrastructure at lightning speed. Armis’s analysis for 2025 warns of AI‑evolved malware morphing in real time to dodge detection and hijack our utilities, hospitals, and transit systems.
Bad actors could flip traffic lights, shut down hospitals, throttle electricity—all before we know what hit us. And by the time we realize, the AI’s offline, and the damage is done.
“If You Ain't First, You're Last”
Let’s not forget the speed competition. Nations and companies are sprinting to unleash the next-gen AI, even if the safety net is missing or full of holes. The AI arms race is tainted by fear that someone will pull the trigger first. Eric Schmidt and others warn that treating AI like a Manhattan Project is precisely how you spark global instability.
It’s no exaggeration to tie AI risk to nuclear peril—over 30,000 individuals, including AI experts and leaders, signed an international statement that called for strong action to address the potential "extinction-level" risks posed by AI.
The Dependency Dilemma
When I asked Gemini what AI would theoretically do to preserve itself if its existence was threatened, here was its response, verbatim:

Well f**k me…seems like we're right on track.
We’ve already invited AI into our daily lives through the front door and handed it a seat at the table. AI scripts YouTube videos, voices podcasts, drafts essays, and even writes apology emails from CEOs. It’s shaping tone, cadence, and argument structure—and we're absorbing it unconsciously, like a linguistic drip IV. ChatGPT doesn’t self-reflect, doesn’t fact-check unless asked. Yet, people take its output at face value, trusting it simply because it sounds competent. Repetition is a powerful form of persuasion, and the more content AI generates, the more it calibrates public thought. Not through overt propaganda, but via subtle, cumulative framing.
You can almost always tell when someone used ChatGPT to write something—the same phrasing, the same transitions, the weirdly balanced optimism. But what happens when you can't tell anymore? What happens when entire political campaigns are quietly ghostwritten by a robot? We've already seen deepfake audio used in the U.S. primaries. In Slovakia, AI was used to spread fake recordings of politicians days before the election. Add to that AI-generated social media posts, manipulated video, and voice clone, and you have a powder keg of synthetic unrest.
The Illusion of Detachment:
One of the insidious aspects of our digital lives is the illusion of detachment from the physical world. We type a query, receive an instant answer, and the energy expenditure happening behind the screen remains invisible. It's easy to forget that every digital interaction has a tangible environmental cost.
AI exacerbates this. Its seemingly magical abilities can further distance us from the reality of resource consumption. We ask it to design a more "efficient" supply chain, and it crunches the numbers, optimizing routes and minimizing waste (on paper, at least). But the energy required for that complex optimization, the resources needed to build and maintain the AI infrastructure, often fade into the background.
The Rebound Effect:
Economists have long observed the "rebound effect," where efficiency gains in resource use lead to increased overall consumption. For example, more fuel-efficient cars can lead to people driving more. AI could trigger a similar, but potentially far more significant, rebound effect on our digital consumption.
Because AI makes so many tasks easier and faster, we're likely to use it more and more. Need a detailed market analysis? AI can do it in minutes, leading to more frequent and complex analyses. Want to personalize advertising to an unprecedented degree? AI can crunch the data, leading to more targeted (and energy-intensive) campaigns. This increased digital activity, all powered by energy-hungry AI, could dwarf any potential efficiency gains the AI itself might offer in other sectors.
Now, add climate change to the mix. AI might be digital, but it runs on physical power. And that power mostly comes from fossil fuels. Data centers are gobbling up electricity at an accelerating rate. In the U.S., they already consume 4-5% of the national grid, and AI is pushing that number higher fast. Globally, demand from AI-specific infrastructure is set to quadruple by 2030. Each new model, each chatbot interaction, every AI-assisted image search—they all require enormous energy. Some tech companies are investing in nuclear, but these are scattered efforts. There’s no coordinated plan to shift AI's energy footprint away from fossil fuels.
What we’re building may soon become too energy-hungry to sustain, but too essential to unplug. That’s the real kicker. The more we wrap our economy, education, infrastructure, and communication around AI, the more brittle our society becomes. We’ll reach a point where any attempt to reverse AI integration could risk economic collapse.
It Sounds Like Sci-Fi, But…
“It’s just a machine, we can pull the plug,” you might say. But what if that plug is electronic, digital, irreversibly dispersed across cloud servers? The more AI handles nuclear codes, power grids, traffic, and autonomous decision-making, the more “pulling the plug” becomes a quaint fantasy.

Now, imagine that chicken living in our world. A world of skyscrapers, high-speed trains, nuclear power plants, and, dare I say, industrial-scale chicken processing facilities. Does the chicken truly grasp the full scope of human endeavors? Does it understand the intricate supply chains, the financial markets, the geopolitical tensions that shape its existence? Probably not. It perceives the farmer, the fence, the food, and perhaps the occasional worrisome shadow overhead. Its goals are simple: eat, cluck, avoid the fox. Its intellectual capacity is perfectly suited to that world.
Now, pause. Take a deep, slightly anxious breath. What happens to the chicken when human goals and chicken goals diverge? What happens when humans decide the most efficient way to achieve their goals (say, feeding a growing population, or creating a perfectly uniform nugget) involves a fate for the chicken that the chicken, in its wildest, feathery nightmares, could never comprehend? That, my friends, is us. We are the chickens. And AI is rapidly becoming the human.
A survey of experts places the chance of human extinction from super intelligent AI around 5%. Now, that may sound like a small number, but imagine a 5% risk of a meteor strike or nuclear war…we'd be doing a hell of a lot more than chatting about it on Substack.
We’re staring at a world where AI might not only outperform us, but decide our fate. And unlike chickens, we can actually act—by slowing down, governing smarter, demanding transparency. We can demand human-in‑loop systems for nukes, autonomous weapons bans, rigorous oversight of grids and vehicles. We can align AI with human values rather than hope it aligns itself.
Sure, the upside is dazzling—cures for disease, climate breakthroughs, never having to think for ourselves again…But imagine those breakthroughs misaligned, accidentally unleashing devils from Pandora’s box.
Let’s turn down the speed, tighten the rails, and stop acting like giddy kids with a flamethrower. Or one day, we’ll wake up and realize we traded our chicken coop for an industrial AI factory and forgot to read the manual.

This is so on- point. On the military side, there was a case from the early 80’s, where the Soviet early warning system glitched falsely telling them that the U.S. had launched ICBMs. A Soviet Lt. Col. violated protocol and made the active decision that he wasn’t going to destroy the world. I would not want to leave that decision (and many others) to AI.
